The N.W.F.A (National Wood Flooring Association) advocates that the task of floor finishing should be only done by professionals, but some homeowners have shown resilience in obeying this order. Many home owners today still conduct finishing on their floors themselves with sanding supplies yearly. Some handy ones among them have been pretty successful in using the right finishing and supplies, while some haven’t. Whatever the case maybe, there is no need to fret, they are all the same, but due to other factors like time, and other valuable resources, you don’t have to finish floors by yourself, you can just hire a professional to help you. In any case, should you wish to overlook the N.W.F.A advice and still do it yourself, you would definitely need to know the types of finishing and supplies needed for sanding floors.

Wood fillers

One of the supplies and finishing for sanding floors are wood fillers. Wood fillers are materials that are used after floors have been sanded. It is used to seal any gap, small spaces or nail holes that are found amid the board. It comes in various colours. Before buying wood fillers, be sure to check the colours against the stain purchased. After applying wood fillers, they must be left to dry up before another floor sanding is conducted and stain applied.

Sanders

There are three main types of floor sanders that a contractor usually use for most floor sanding jobs, they are: 110-volt tilt drum sander, 220 volt drum sander and 220 volt belt sander. These sanders have their individual advantages and disadvantages. Anyway, sanders must be used individually at an open space to avoid unequal sanding of the floors. If you wish to sand the edge of room walls, use disk or edge sanders. For smaller spots sanding, hand sanders are used to give that extra floor finishing. Depending on the level of roughness of the floor and thickness, different sandpaper grit is applied to achieve the expected finish.

Hand scrapers

These are files used to take out the used finishing that is left around door casings, cabinets or inside door jambs.

Vacuum

This is used at interval on the floor to eliminate dust before stains are applied. Alternatively, a roller that has paint thinner can also be used on the floor to take away other bits in preparation for stain application.

Stains

Stains are designed with different colours from light to dark colours. You can choose to use stain and polyurethane, but, this is usually discouraged as separate stains with oil contents are mostly recommended.
